Stairs and Handrails. The perfect complement to hardwood floors.

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Yes, we do hardwood flooring. Yes, we install new floors and refinish old floors, staining them or just coating them natural. In the past few years, we have been getting a lot of requests to update stairs, balusters and handrailing.

Right now, homeowners are remodeling their kitchens and bathrooms, putting in new tile, which we install as well. They’re having new hardwood floors installed to replace worn carpeting. Some are extending existing hardwood into new rooms, like bedrooms and offices. And many are having their old floors refinished to bring them back to their former glory. In the updating process, they realize their stairways, balusters and handrails are outdated. It may not be as big an undertaking as you think.

Technically, all we do is replace old parts with new ones in an updated style. Adhering to building codes as we go. To help keep costs down, I always suggest that homeowners buy the materials. I then pick up the materials when they come in, and take them to my shop to be finished. Believe it or not, I coat stair treads, balusters and wooden handrail parts with Glitsa® Swedish sealer to give it more durability. Then I topcoat with a satin sheen. Of course, you can also choose to put in wrought iron if that’s more your style.

I find handrails fun to do! When someone hires us to update their handrailing it is a treat. It’s the cherry on top. This is custom carpentry work. Planning, laying out the handrail, leveling and lining things up can be quite challenging. When we finish with updated handrails, the impact in the house is quite surprising and pleasing.

One of the last handrail projects we completed was a combination of painted balusters and painted newel posts with a stained handrail to match the hardwood flooring on the main level of the house. If you stop to think about it, the possibilities are limitless!
